The Culver-Stockton Criminal Justice Program will host the Annual Fallen Officer Project on April 12 in the Mabee Sports Complex Gym. This tournament is open to C-SC students, staff and faculty. Participants can play pickleball while paying tribute to law enforcement officers and firefighters who have lost their life in the line of duty. The cost to participate is $20 per team, with a limit of 20 teams.

Money raised or donations received during the tournament will benefit two organizations: Supporting Heroes, Inc. and Michigan Urban Youth Alliance organizations. Supporting Heroes, Inc. is focused on serving family members of fallen first responders to create relationships amid tragedy, and Michigan Urban Youth Alliance promotes community policing initiatives with inner-city youth.

The pickleball tournament is a culmination of the 12-week course entitled “In the Line of Duty,” which teaches students historical, emotional, and interpersonal skills to understand further the commitment first responders make when taking an oath as professionals.

Seth McBride, Senior Lecturer in Criminal Justice at , teaches the course. He said the objective is to recognize the fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice. “The content covered in this course, and the conversations that take place throughout the 12-week semester, will push students outside of their comfort zone,” McBride said. “We are asking college students to create connections with someone who has tragically lost a loved one in the line of duty. These difficult conversations and the relationships that result from them will prepare the minds of our students for the trajectory of their career.”

For more information regarding the Fallen Officer Project, contact Seth McBride at smcbride@culver.edu.

(C-SC) is pleased to welcome acclaimed author J.E. Stamper as the keynote speaker for its upcoming Education Mini Conference on Thursday, March 27. Stamper, who speaks at 9 a.m. in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium, is the author of Ugly Me. He will address both C-SC students and visiting students from area schools during the keynote speaker event.

According to Ugly Me’s description on Amazon, the book was inspired by real students and their real-world struggles.

“It’s a raw, powerful, and unforgettable journey inside the mind of a child who feels lost, broken, and unworthy of love. Through the [main character’s] eyes, readers experience the heartbreaking reality of trauma, bullying, and self-doubt—but also the small moments of hope that can change everything,” notes the Amazon blurb.

“We are thrilled to have J.E. Stamper join us for this spring’s Education Mini Conference,” said C-SC Associate Professor of Education Cindy Whiston. “His work resonates deeply with young readers, and his message of perseverance and self-worth aligns perfectly with the values we seek to instill in our students.”

The Education Mini Conference is a semi-annual event designed to provide future educators and students with opportunities for professional development, networking, and engagement with impactful voices in education. This spring’s conference will include a series of interactive activities and break-out session discussions aimed at enhancing the learning experience for all attendees.

(C-SC) hosted the Missouri Small Schools Band Directors Association (MSSBDA) Festival on March 6, offering a day of music education and professional development for small school music educators and their students. Held at C-SC, the event brought together several talented student ensembles and provided a valuable experience for both educators and students.

MSSBDA’s mission is to support and empower small school music educators while offering quality educational experiences for their students. This festival features two main components: an adjudicated performance and a clinic portion. Each participating ensemble performed for three judges, followed by a clinic in which these adjudicators provided valuable feedback and guidance. Professor of Music Trent Hollinger served as a judge.

“We are proud to host the MSSBDA Festival to provide a platform for young musicians to develop their skills and grow as performers,” said Hollinger. “This event not only showcases the talent of small school ensembles, but it also fosters an environment where students and educators can receive valuable feedback from experienced adjudicators. It’s an honor to support music education and inspire the next generation of musicians.”

The following schools participated in the C-SC festival: South Shelby, Brashear, Paris, Heartland Christian Academy, Wellsville-Middletown, Knox County, Monroe City, and Marion County. All bands that participated received either a 1 (exemplary), 2 (outstanding), or 3 (satisfactory) rating.

Several times a year throughout Missouri, the MSSBDA Festival provides enriching opportunities for music educators to learn, grow, and provide their students with exceptional educational experience in the world of music performance.
