CANTON, Mo. — More than a dozen athletic trainers and other health care providers, with at least six colleges and universities represented, will be participating in a personalized blood flow restriction rehabilitation course in the athletic training classroom in the Science Center at ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø. The class begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, and is expected to last throughout the business day.

The course takes an in-depth look at the physiology of blood flow restriction and how it aids in making adaptive muscular changes with light weights available in a rehabilitation setting. The course also covers the history, safety and practical applications of personalized blood flow restriction.

A personalized tourniquet system for blood flow restriction (PTS for BFR) made by Delfi, a Canadian company, will be on display during the course. It is intended for use on patients for whom a physician or physician’s designated licensed health care practitioner has indicated perioperative blood flow restricted exercise.

The device is FDA-listed and meets all of the same safety requirements as devices used in the operating room. Due to regulation from the device manufacturer, an active medical license (physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic trainer, chiropractor or medical doctor) and completion of the certification course is mandatory to be allowed to buy the device.
