CANTON, Mo. — Rachel Bringer Shepherd, presiding judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit Court that serves Marion, Monroe and Ralls counties, will address students on the importance of women voting and participating in the election process at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 in Meaders Lounge in the Gladys Crown Student Center on the ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø campus.

To celebrate Women’s History Month and the 100th anniversary of women in the United States obtaining the right to vote, Shepherd will speak about how women have lagged behind men in voting and how females running for office often find it more difficult than their male counterparts to raise funds.

Shepherd, a native of Palmyra, Mo., received her undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri in 1992 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1995. She was an assistant prosecuting attorney for Marion County from 2000 to 2002, and she served as a Democratic member of District 6 in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2002 to 2011. Shepherd was appointed as circuit judge in December 2010.
