The post Mock Home Prepares Students for Career in Child Advocacy first appeared on 乱伦社区.]]> C-SC is one of the few colleges in the country that offers a minor in Child Advocacy Studies. In one of the six courses, students address a child abuse case by conducting a home investigation and parent interviews in a simulation laboratory called a 鈥淢ock House.鈥 During the simulation, participants review witness reports, observe photographs indicating abuse, and manage mandated reporter calls.

Before the simulation, students in the CAST program prepare from various disciplines to work with children affected by traumatic events, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. The curricula in these courses are aligned with the Zero Abuse Project, and C-SC faculty collaborate with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network on the case where vignettes are used.

鈥淭his mock house simulation is one of the highlights of the students鈥 experiences,鈥 Dr. Angel Knoverek said.鈥 Knoverek serves the College as the CAST Coordinator and Director of Counselor Education. She continued, 鈥淚t鈥檚 interesting to watch them balance the excitement related to learning with the intense heaviness of the topic and details related to the child abuse case. The simulation also helps them understand the need for self-care when working with individuals who have experienced trauma.鈥 The mock house simulation is a one-day event at 乱伦社区.

Palmer, President, and Dr. Lauren Schellenberger, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, along with Dr. Jay Hoffman, Acting Dean for Graduate and Professional Studies, are proud to announce the launch of a new graduate program at 乱伦社区. The Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) is designed to develop the knowledge and skills needed to become an exceptional professional advocate in the field of mental and behavioral health counseling and child advocacy networks.

Applications for admission are now open. The curriculum is designed for the working professional or the traditional undergraduate student who desires to enter the workforce with an advanced degree. The graduate coursework will be obtained over three years part-time or two years full-time. Most instruction takes place online, except for two separate intensive instruction course periods offered in the summer for one week. Cohorts of students will begin each August, January, and May to meet the sixty-credit hour requirement for CACREP accreditation and state licensure/certification.

The programs were developed by Dr. Angel Knoverek 鈥93, who serves the College as an Assistant Professor of Psychology. Knoverek has a rich history as a licensed professional counselor and focused on childhood trauma for nearly 30 years before joining the Culver-Stockton faculty as an educator. Knoverek shared, 鈥淚鈥檓 very excited to have the opportunity to develop the Master of Arts in Counseling and look forward to advancing our students in their livelihoods as professionals, caring individuals, and contributors to their communities.鈥 Graduates of the C-SC Master of Arts in Counseling program will gain unique experiences to transform their careers and the lives of clients they serve.
