Incoming first-year C-SC students and faculty will complete the EDM projects as a part of the matriculation tradition. This event began in 2014 and aims to connect new students to the local community through servant leadership. Community projects can include landscaping, small paint projects, cleanup, or other manual labor that could be completed in one day. Project requests can be submitted at

A student planning committee is organizing this year’s EDM event as part of the “Community Action” course. Students have been divided into teams to provide a more comprehensive learning experience for the campus community. Groups include marketing, project management, and fundraising. A junior business student, Adriana Farrell, shared, “Being part of the marketing committee has allowed me a different view of this event, and we are excited to welcome new students to campus with this annual event.” Farrell said her peers find value in this course because they are taking a leading role in this event that is important to the College, the community, and the student experience.

During the August 19 event, over 300 students, new and returning, along with faculty and staff, will begin from the Alexander Campbell Auditorium to walk through campus and into the Canton community. C-SC students will serve the community during EDM at no labor cost to the organization or project requestor. Priority will be given to requests received by April 1, 2023.

The schedule is set to begin at 9:15 a.m. in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium, where all incoming first-year students will learn the mission of service at , the reason for EDM, and the historic tether between the College and the Canton community. Then, the students will be commissioned by President Dr. Douglas B. Palmer to go into the community and serve. The group, consisting of approximately 350 students and 50 employees, will walk through the campus concourse, down the iconic hill, and into Canton, where they will complete projects at nine different locations throughout the morning.

“EDM represents who we are at ,” President Palmer shared. “It is with a purpose that our new students are led into the local community within their first days of being C-SC students because serving others and learning by doing is a large part of our identity here.” Palmer said that this event establishes the expectation for students to become a member of the local community and allows the College to show gratitude to city residents for their support.

This year’s EDM projects include landscaping, trash removal, and general clean-up at parks, community centers, library, daycare, senior housing, and additional city properties. For additional information about EDM, please contact Dr. Scott Giltner at sgiltner@culver.edu.

CANTON, Mo. — This year’s Everyone Doing More event had a different look but still had the same message.

annually begins the first week of school with its EDM event, which is in its 11th year. In years past, it gave students the opportunity to go into the Canton community to perform service projects. This year’s activities, held Saturday, Aug. 22, were limited to the C-SC campus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but organizers designed each activity for students to help other groups and organizations.

Among the activities were:

  • Painting rocks for The Child Center, Inc., in Hannibal, Mo.
  • Painting rocks and writing letters to kindergarten students in the Canton R-V School District.
  • Labeling and packaging masks for the Canton R-V School District.
  • Filling snack baskets and writing thank-you letters for first responders in Canton and on campus.
  • Creating face masks out of fabric for a C-SC alum who has been donating face masks since the start of the pandemic.
  • Recording videos of reading children’s books for the Canton Public Library.
  • Making dog toys out of T-shirts for the Northeast Missouri Humane Society in Hannibal, Mo.
  • Painting guard rails on campus.
  • Making tie blankets for the North Central Missouri chapter of Project Linus, a non-profit organization that provides homemade blankets to children in need.
  • Creating education videos on mental health, responsible drinking and social responsibility.

First-year students, transfer students and Wildcat Welcome leaders participated in the EDM event and were supervised by C-SC faculty and staff. About 330 students took part.

“Overall, I really do think it went pretty well,” said Amanda Sorenson, chaplain at Culver-Stockton and coordinator of the event. “This was our first year doing it this way, and most of the groups had a good energy and got a lot done. A lot of the projects allowed for creativity and for them to have fun with it.

“Some projects will benefit the broader community, and we may continue to do some of them in future years. They were fun, they were engaging, and every student was busy.”

Sorenson also gave credit to Katie Conaway, a senior English education and theatre major from Steelville, Mo., who was taking an honors service learning course.

“She was my right hand during this process,” Sorenson said. “She did as much as I did.”
