“It is truly an honor and very humbling to receive this recognition,” Carmichael said. “It’s something I never expected. It is very heartwarming to realize that my peers recognize and respect my contributions at a level to even consider an honor like this.”

Carmichael earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in athletic coaching from Northwest Missouri State University. He received his master’s degree in health education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He became certified in athletic training in 1991 and licensed in 1992. He served as the assistant athletic trainer for the former Southwest Missouri State University for two years before joining the C-SC faculty in 1994.

During his time at C-SC, Carmichael was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the college’s 4-year academic athletic training program, including not only the curriculum but also supporting materials for assessments, evaluations, and policies. He started the then Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited program at C-SC in 2000 and served dual roles as the program director and head athletic trainer for 15 years. In 2011, Carmichael was named the NAIA Head Athletic Trainer of the Year by the former NATA College/University Athletic Trainers’ Committee. He currently serves on the Athletic Advisory Council, Substance Abuse Committee, and the Threat Assessment Team.

Off-campus, Carmichael has been active with MoATA since 2014, serving as chair of the Honors & Awards Committee and the association’s secretary before becoming president of the organization and serving from 2020 through 2023. He is a Sports Medicine Fellowship advisory committee member for the Quincy Family Practice-SIU School of Medicine. He is married to his wife, Diane, and they have two children and three grandchildren.

The MoATA, a professional organization for athletic trainers in Missouri, serves its members by promoting the profession through communication, education and advocacy. It has 898 members, and it has been highly active in legislative efforts in the capital of Jefferson City during the past two years. Carmichael, who has been the president-elect since 2017 and served a three-year term as secretary, also will serve on the board of directors for District 5 (which consists of seven states) in the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Carmichael has been an athletic trainer at C-SC since 1994. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Northwest Missouri State University in 1990 and a master’s degree in health education from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1992, where he also served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.

His primary sports responsibilities are with the C-SC football and baseball programs. His teaching responsibilities include therapeutic modalities and adjunct responsibilities as needed. Carmichael was named the NAIA Head Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2011 by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
