Leonard Bernstein鈥檚 鈥淪lava!鈥 is a vaudevillian razz-ma-tazz concert overture featuring trumpet, trombone, soprano sax and electric guitar.聽The 2009 composition 鈥淟uminescence鈥 by David Biedenbender is based on fragments of the Christian hymn, 鈥淏reak Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light,鈥 harmonized by J.S. Bach.聽 This contemporary work features splashes of percussion color paired with powerful brass and lyrical woodwinds. The jazz ensemble will feature songs peripherally following the footsteps of two colossal pianists of jazz 鈥 Dave Brubeck and Stan Kenton. The set will begin with a Mike Lewis arrangement of the Paul Desmond Classic, 鈥淭ake Five,鈥 the third track on the Dave Brubeck Quartet album, 鈥淭ime Out.鈥 The band will then transition into a trombone section feature entitled 鈥淏ear Bones鈥 by Lennie Niehaus, the solo alto and arranger for the Stan Kenton Big Band.聽Next is a classic Jimmy Webb song, 鈥淢acArthur Park,鈥 arranged by Dee Barton as recorded by Kenton.

Finally, Dr. Aren Van Houzen, visiting assistant professor of music at Culver-Stockton, will pick up his trumpet in traditional band leader fashion to 鈥減reach a little truth鈥 in the style of Maynard Ferguson, Kenton鈥檚 lead trumpeter from 1950-57, in the Jeff Steinberg classic, 鈥淕ospel John.鈥
